Abstract
In the second half of the 15th century, Louis I, Count Palatine of Zweibrücken established a vast network of residences. His territories were rather small and scattered but rich of natural resources, especially silver. He succeeded in marrying Johanna of Croÿ, daughter of Count Antoine I de Croÿ, the Governor General of the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Louis I tried to gain more influence in the Holy Roman Empire, too, and came into conflict with his cousin Frederick I, Elector Palatine. In 1471, Louis I has been finally beaten. He lost large parts of his territory and had to swear fealty to Frederick I.
